Bridges can play an integral and important role in protecting our wetlands.  With increases in human population over the last hundred years, the demands for safe, reliable transportation has resulted in the physical, chemical, and biological damage to watersheds, whether through filling, excavation, diversion of water or by other means.  The challenge of maintaining water quality in large areas of wetlands has resulted in numerous technological advances, especially with bridges, to help mitigate this impact, protect future damage, and meet the needs and demands of transportation.

State departments of transportation (DOTs) are demonstrating the valuable role that they can play in protecting and enhancing wildlife habitats. Many states are planning, building, and retrofitting roads & bridges with measures to improve landscape connectivity and reduce the effects on watersheds.
