Stormwater Drainage Stormwater Drainage Best Management Practice (BMPs)

In urbanized areas and new developments, poor drainage from an increase in impermeable surfaces can result in an increase in stormwater run-off.  Buildings, roads, parking areas, and exposed surfaces increase the volume and speed of stormwater runoff.  Stormwater drainage systems collect this stormwater runoff and carry it away from roadways and structures to a discharge point, preventing flooding and protecting property and watersheds.

Stormwater drainage systems may consist of curbs, gutters, storm drains, channels, ditches, pipes, and culverts as well as a variety of other drainage technologies.  Since stormwater drainage systems are not designed to treat stormwater, they may be paired with a treatment technology to address any water quality issues.
